ACE IT is a Winner - Edinburgh Council Get
Up +Go Awards 2006
On
Thursday 20th July the Edinburgh Silver Surfers and staff and
volunteers from ACE IT were once again invited to attend the City
Chambers on the Royal Mile where both projects had been nominated
for awards from the annual Get Up + Go Awards hosted by Edinburgh
Council. The Get Up + Go Programme brings together a wide selection
of community projects, volunteer groups and individuals working to
provide an extensive range of services and activities to the over 50
age group within the capital.
The
ceremony was opened with a short introduction and outline of the
programme provided by Glenda Watt - Strategy Manager for 'A City for
All Ages' and Joan Turner - Chair of 'The Older People's Equality
Forum'. The awards were then presented by local entertainer and
media personality Bill Torrance (BBC's Beechgrove Garden) assisted
by Ruth McAlpine - special projects officer of 'Edinburgh Council's
Culture and Leisure Dept'. Bill's light hearted banter and
enthusiasm for the projects involved ensured an extremely enjoyable
afternoon for all present.
ACE
IT were winners in the category 'Raising the profile of older people
within the city of Edinburgh'. "We are delighted to receive this
award". Said Jenny Ridge, ACE IT's Chief Executive. "We are still a
young project and to receive this award means a great deal to
everyone involved with ACE IT. Our grateful thanks go out to all the
volunteers, staff and particularly the surfers and the learners.
We've come a long way to get this award and we're absolutely
delighted".
PoL
Steele, ACE IT's creative and web designer went on to say. "ACE IT
has had a fantastic year which included the
ACE IT Silver Surfers
Festival throughout May and the launch of a number of online
projects which we are thrilled to see are having a real grassroots
impact within the community infrastructure of the capital and
beyond. We are all delighted to receive this acknowledgement of all
our hard work over the last year! ....Roll on 2007!"
Many
congratulations too to Gorgie Dalry Community Association who
were the winners in the 'Creating Opportunities' category. In the
past year they have provided older people with a wide range of sport
and leisure activities at their McLeod Street premises. Jim Young
centre manager says " It's always good to be recognised for the
services you offer, and we are particularly pleased with this award"
