Since moving to our new home in Edinburgh’s famous George
Street, many of our learners have remarked on the beautiful
architecture of the building. In particular the ornate
medallions featured on the ceilings within the two smaller
offices have attracted much attention and comment.

We understand that such medallions first originated in the
Middle East and later spread throughout Europe and on to
Scotland.
Can anyone throw some light on the meaning or history of the
figures and designs of our medallions?
As we understand it the designs featured on the medallions
could be influenced by early Roman, Greek or Baroque
Architecture.
We would be interested in getting more information on this
subject.
