January 2006: Moose in the
Hoose Project

Pass it on –
There’s a ‘Moose in the Hoose’!
Computers and it are brilliant things. They bring the world to your
doorstep – but to be useful your door does need to be open.
Together,
the City of Edinburgh Council’s Health and Social Care Department,
Age Concern Edinburgh Information Technology (ACEit) and RSVP
Scotland (CSV’s Retired and Senior Volunteer Programme) have set up
‘Moose in the Hoose’ to open the ‘it-door’ for Edinburgh’s older
people.
14 friendly, it-literate volunteers, all themselves 50+, now provide
computer support and encouragement to residents in 4 residential
care homes and 2 sheltered housing schemes in the City. Their weekly
visits allow people to explore the Internet and access e-mail. As
new friendships are made across the keyboard, contacts are made and
maintained across continents.
The project involves some complex organisation –
3
agencies, 6 different groups of older people, 9 different staff
teams, 14 busy volunteers – but the real partnership comes from all
these of people coming together, sharing the exploration,
frustrations and the fun of it.
That’s why we don’t want to keep our ‘Moose in the Hoose’ a secret
any longer! The project has now been put forward for the
Scottish Social Services Council Care Accolades Award in the
category Partnership Working : "Initiatives that promote
integrated working which improve services"
