When learner Evelyn Harrison began the basic computer training course at ACE IT (Age Concern Edinburgh Information Technology), little did she realise that within a matter of weeks she would have used her new found computer skills to achieve 2nd place in a national digital photography competition!

“Little did I think at the onset” Said Evelyn in a letter to ACE IT. “That I would be working with photos on our computer and then, with some essential help in the class, e-mailing one of my pictures to Age Concern’s “Memories of summer” photo competition (Linkage Newsletter).

A short time later Evelyn was delighted to hear that not only had her photograph of ‘Sunrise at Loch Rannoch’ received 2nd place in the competition - but also that she had won a prize of Marks & Spencer gift vouchers worth £25.

“We were thrilled to hear that Evelyn had done so well in the competition” Said Jenny Ridge, Chief Executive of ACE IT. “We always encourage our learners to explore ways and means of getting the most of the internet. Evelyn’s experience just goes to show what can be achieved with even a little experience”.

Returning to class for the final training session saw Evelyn present the staff of ACE IT with a framed copy of the winning photograph alongside a donation of the prize vouchers.

“Winning a prize was an added bonus and as a “thank you” for enabling me to enter” Evelyn went on to say. “I would like to donate the prize I was given to ACE IT to spend on something for the office”.

Evelyn’s tutor Maria Bathgate commented “ I’m so happy that Evelyn won, she is so enthusiastic and it will encourage future learners to fulfil their dreams.

“Digital cameras have opened up new worlds for many people who would never normally describe themselves as artistic” Said Pol Steele, ACE IT’s creative designer. “Online exhibitions are a great way for people to share their work with the world and can encourage folk to explore the creative possibilities of their computers. Coming at the very end of their 10 week training course with ACE IT ,Evelyn and her husband celebrated the benefits of taking the first steps down the digital highway”.

“Thank you again for making our learning journey so enjoyable!”
