National Campaign Comes To Edinburgh
to Help People 'Get Safe Online'
‘Get Safe Online’ Report Highlights Public Confusion Over Online
Safety
Scottish launch at Age Concern Edinburgh Information Technology (ACE
IT) Centre Thursday 10 November at 11.00 by Sarah Boyack MSP at
Caledonian House, 42 Caledonian Crescent, EH11 2AG
Millions
of UK Internet users are putting themselves at risk of attack from
Internet criminals because they don’t understand threats to their
computer or the ways to protect against them. These are the findings
of a new campaign called ‘Get Safe Online’ which comes to Edinburgh
, as part of a national tour to tackle this serious problem.
As threats from organised Internet criminals grow, new research from
Get Safe Online
www.getsafeonline.org
has found that over three quarters of the UK’s population (83%)
don’t know enough about protecting themselves online. In fact 42% of
the population just rely on friends and family for online safety
advice rather than finding expert information for themselves.
Get Safe Online’s fleet of minis will arrive in Edinburgh today,
bringing a team of security experts who will be demonstrating
www.getsafeonline.org
a one-stop-shop for reliable, up-to-date information about online
safety, to give home users and small businesses the advice they need
to use the Internet safely.
Edinburgh Central MSP Sarah Boyack said:
"As
the use of the internet increases for banking and buying things like
holidays, travel tickets and insurance, people and small businesses
need to have confidence that their transactions are safe and their
privacy and operating systems are protected. I am very pleased to
support this joint initiative and would encourage as many people as
possible to visit the Get Safe Online website to ensure that they do
not fall prey to online criminals."
Jenny Ridge ACE IT’s Chief Exec said:
“Our computer training project for the 50+group has been running now
for over 4 years – teaching over 1200 learners how to use the
Internet. We know the eager learners are keen to shop and bank on
line so it is important for them to be fully aware of security
protection”
Experts and information will be available at the following venues in
